Dating back 500 years and paid for with Spanish silver, 16th century Guanajuato is one of Mexico’s most stunning cosmopolitan centers, and also one of it’s most overlooked. In May, we’re heading to this UNESCO World Heritage Site for a long weekend of exploration, delicious eating, stimulating entertainment, and more.

Join us in our designer home above the city, with epic views across Guanajuato’s glittering night sky. Up a narrow set of winding stairs carved into the hills, it’s the perfect homebase for three days of wandering the city at your own pace, with local, delightful, optional activities sprinkled in throughout for your enjoyment.

Long tunnels, ancient mummies, and vibrant nightlife

From silver mining roots to a thriving art scene

Set deep into a valley, built on a series of tunnels, with narrow and winding streets in many cases impassable to vehicles, Guanajuato is a picturesque, lovely Mexican cosmopolitan center, with the feeling of a smaller town and the pulse of an exciting city.

At it’s heart, Guanajuato is a college town, and in the center of the city stands a steep, long set of stairs leading up to the university, established in 1732. Walking through the streets, you’ll find mariachi bands singing at full volume, flyers for theater performances, and open doors leading you into inviting cantinas for a cold beer.

Walk up the cobblestone alleys and you’ll find the local baseball stadium, the world famous Museo de las Momias, and delightful restaurants and bars featuring traditional and modern Mexican and international cuisine.

At the base of the valley

In the center of town, spend an afternoon jotting notes in your journal amidst the landscaping of the Jardin de la Union, or drink a michelada in Plaza de la Paz, set in the shadow of the Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato. It’s a perfect city for strolling.

Our home in Guanajuato

Our homebase is a house up a narrow alley, above the Jardin de la Union and it’s collection of bars and restaurants. The view from the expansive deck stretches out over the entire city, and it’s the perfect spot for a sunset tea or cocktail after a full day of exploration.

Sites around town

From El Pipila, a statue perched above the city (and incidentally, an excellent place to catch an afternoon michelada), you can see the entire city, from Hidalgo Market, filled with food stalls and local wares for sale, to the baseball stadium and it’s homemade chicharron sandwiches. A long weekend is there perfect amount of time to experience Guanajuato’s charms.
