A long weekend exploring Big Sur
In October, we're partnering with our friends at Pacific Overlander for a journey down Highway 1 through Big Sur. This is more than just a drive down the coast, though - we're venturing south in roof-top-tented, 4WD-equipped, fully-kitted-out Toyota 4Runners and Jeep Wranglers. We'll meet up Friday for coffee in Fort Point, San Francisco before starting out for a weekend of wonder and discovery. This will be a mix of individual vehicle travel and caravanning, and stopping at our leisure for photography, hikes, oysters, brisk water dips and croissants from Big Sur Bakery. In true overlanding spirit, the itinerary is rough, but we'll look to enjoy a sunset at Pfeiffer Beach, hikes, and great campsites. Four wheel drive and high clearance gave us access to often-overlooked parts of the coast.
By day, each vehicle will choose its own adventure - a relaxing beach vacation with book in hand, or some of the great hikes across the parks. By night, we'll meet up at campsites for delicious food, cold beers, and plenty of time for late-night hangs. Alongside the vehicles’ rooftop tents, we'll have camping gear - just bring a sleeping bag.
Meeting under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on the morning of the first day, we'll head south along the coast and down towards Big Sur. The first night will be spent at an organized campground with facilities, while the second night look forward to wilderness camping on a high ridge overlooking the Pacific.
